Compositions and Methods for treating diabetes

Description:

The current state of the art

About 10% of the US population, 34.2 million people, have diabetes and about 34.5% of the US adults, 88 million people, have prediabetes (higher than normal blood sugar). Exercise has been shown to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes through increasing energy expenditure and insulin-induced membrane translocation of GLUT4 and anti-inflammatory properties.

Problems with the current art

However, exercise can be strenuous, time-consuming, and difficult to maintain given today’s rapid-paced digital society. There is a need to develop other treatments to control blood glucose levels and to lower the incidence of type 2 diabetes.

The advantages of our invention

The scientists at AU developed a novel treatment to control blood glucose levels. This method uses an effective amount of probiotic/prebiotic composition in combination or alternation with whole-body vibration therapy. The whole body vibration therapy can be administered for 5 mins, 10 mins, 15 mins, 20 mins, 25 mins, or 30 mins per day. This composition can be orally administered. In db/db mice, the probiotic composition and the whole body vibration reduced HaA1c level by 3%. Therefore, the combination of probiotics and whole-body vibration is a potential candidate to control glucose levels for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes.
